In solidarity with the worldwide celebration of Earth Day, Heritage Hotel Manila representatives signed up for the 5K and 10K run and joined around 5,000 participants in the 1st National Geographic Earth Run during the break of dawn last April 18, 2010 at the SM Mall of Asia (MOA) grounds to raise awareness on the need to mitigate the effects of global warming and raise funds for the benefit of Design Against the Elements (DAtE), a global architectural design contest that aims to provide a solution to the problems presented by climate change.
The DAtE project aims to challenge think tanks and architectural whiz kids to design sustainable and eco-friendly communities that could withstand the strong manifestations of climate change as experienced in the Philippines: unprecedented flooding in 80% of Metro Manila brought by super typhoon Ketsana (Ondoy).
“It is unfortunate to know that we are one of the most vulnerable to natural disasters but the least to adapt. The fun run raises the people’s awareness about caring for nature but at the same we find ways to adapt to the threats of climate change by supporting green building solutions,” averred Illac Diaz, DAtE head honcho and founder & Executive Director of MyShelter Foundation.
“We are happy with the turn-out of the participants in National Geographic Channel’s first ever Earth Day Run. It shows how much we Filipinos care about our planet and how much we are willing to sacrifice to help address the issue of climate change,” stated Mr. Jude Turcuato, Territory Director of FOX International and National Geographic Channel Asia.
Secretary Heherson Alvarez, Presidential Adviser on Global Warming and Climate Change (OPACC), environmentalist and former Senator also graced the event together with some the local celebrities who participated in the run: Karylle Tatlonghari (who won 2nd place in the 3K run), Julia Barretto, Palmolive commercial model (daughter of Marjorie Barretto & Dennis Padilla) and Lizelle Martinez with her children.
