Mercy Relief teams partnered with Millennium & Copthorne International to provide disaster relief to typhoon Ondoy victims

Heritage Hotel Manila works hand in hand with Singapore based Mercy Relief to organize and provide relief goods to displaced families and flood victims living near manila’s creek side.

Singapore –based NGO Relief, led by Chief Executive Hassan Ahmad, along with volunteers, with the THHM Executives Ms. Lyn Sy, Director of Finance; Mr. Lawrence Wee, Resident Manager; Ms. Grazie Magsalin, Director of Human Resources;  Ms. Mina Gervacio, Marcom Manager; Ms. Gigi Gaw, Director of Sales & Marketing; Ms. Eli Nilo, Executive Housekeeper.

Singaporean humanitarian NGO, Mercy Relief (MR), together with Singapore-based Millennium & Copthorne International Limited (MCIL), answered the urgent call for aid to victims of Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) in Metro Manila.

MCIL through it’s The Heritage Hotel Manila worked with the Mercy Relief disaster response team to distribute relief supplies and provide ground assessment for future relief engagement. The Heritage Hotel also provided accommodation for the Mercy Relief volunteer team during the five-day mission.

Since the disaster struck, staff of the Heritage Hotel Manila have been raising money to supplement MR’s stock of relief supplies and they have volunteered to support Mercy Relief’s distribution exercise at the Paco
Convent in Manila where they gave out food packs to communities living near the creeks.

Mr Eddie Yeo, General Manager of the Heritage Hotel, said, “In the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy’s devastating effects to human life and property, The Heritage Hotel Manila team demonstrated the Bayanihan spirit, a Filipino trait that shows willingness to help alleviate the plight of fellowmen directly impacted by the disaster.”

“Our Hotel’s Relief Operations Committee raised funds and pooled together basic necessities such as grocery items, bottled water and clothes among the entire staff in order to provide immediate relief to fellow
staff and other typhoon victims in key localities who were directly impacted by the typhoon and whose homes and properties were wreaked and inundated,” said Mr Yeo. “Though our efforts may seem small, we aim to bring hope and renewal to those in need of aid.”

MCIL is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Millennium & Copthorne Hotels plc, which is controlled by the Hong Leong Group. The Group has been supporting Mercy Relief’s humanitarian efforts since 2008 when the organization funded the reconstruction and expansion of one primary school costing S$200,000 in Wolong County, Sichuan, China, following the Wenchuan earthquake last year.

Commenting on the MR-MCIL collaboration, MR Chief Executive, Hassan Ahmad explained, “The corporate sector is playing an increasingly important role in the humanitarian industry. This is the second time that the Hong Leong Group and its affiliate companies are providing early and unreserved support to Mercy Relief in attending to a major disaster, the first being the Wenchuan earthquake relief. ”

“Our network of Millennium & Copthorne hotels across the region has allowed us to pull together our resources quickly to offer some assistance to the victims,” said MCIL Chief Operating Officer, Mr Yim Choong Hing. “Working together with Mercy Relief is one meaningful way that we can contribute. We hope that our efforts will go some way to see them through this tragedy.”
